Critic Reviews for Westworld: Season 1

All Critics (103)

It's not yet clear, despite the quality acting and special effects in this "Westworld," that the story offers anything new.

The great thing about this HBO series is how the creators (Lisa Joy; Jonathan Nolan) have preserved the bare bones of the original concept while reconceiving the whole thing from scratch and in absorbing detail...A compelling clash of genres.

Lots of big ideas, lots of far-flung literary/cinematic references, and lots of violence. Yup, Westworld is a lot - but also a winner with a potentially exciting payoff.

The show is visually stunning -- and oh-so unnerving. Perhaps you'll want to visit Westworld just as much as Westeros.

It's a star-powered, gorgeously shot philosophy class, but one that may be too stiff and ponderous for those who like their action with a little more humanity.

The question of whether Wood and company can make Westworld as emotionally viable as it is fascinating to watch remains to be seen. Still, try looking away.

Audience Reviews for Westworld: Season 1

½

HBO have delivered again, forget Game of Thrones, Westworld will be the king after the biggest show ever concludes. Great twists and a can you decipher the puzzle before the reveal vibe resonates throughout the episodes. One of the best shows on air. 11-06-2018.

WESTWORLD is a show that is immensely ambitious yet excruciatingly frustrating; with characters who range from intellectually stimulating (about a handful) to cliche-ridden caricatural (literally everybody else); an ending that is stunningly realized and boldly satisfying (strong core narrative despite several sub-storylines that fizzle out), but with a journey leading up to it that is at many times scattered, elementary and palm-to-the-face cheesy. Some parts are great, but don't be seduced to thinking this is a top-notch show - just listen to the terribly one-note and quote-heavy dialogue, the overdramatic performances, and the overbearing heaviness of it all (it's just trying so, so hard).
