- I have been a traditional Catholic since 2004 and a vegan since 2008. These are the two most important things about me. I love documentaries. On average, I watch more than one 50' documentary every day, which is several hundred a year. Next are TV series, of which I watch a few episodes a week. Last come fiction films, which I watch at the rate of about one a week, and many of which are made for TV. So if you do not notice much activity on my page, it is just because Flixster is mostly about movies not made for TV, and I am busy watching something else. Apart from documentaries, I also love Japanese anime and animation in general, period movies, science-fiction, fantasy, horror, adaptations of literary classics (BBC mostly), edifying, Christian movies, Asian cinema generally (including Shaw Brothers, mostly from the 60s), children's movies and weird, experimental films. Genres I do not like include sports and dance movies, most war movies, most comedies, romantic films in general, most westerns, crime and gangster movies. I try to boycott all movies that have been rated "O" by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Office for Film and Broadcasting (USCCB) and to be very cautious about films rated "A-IV" (now "L.") Here are the criteria for an "O" rating as explained by the USCCB: "This classification is for films that are excessively violent, graphically sexual, or laden with non-stop vulgarity, or that have little or no redeeming social value or dramatic justification. 'Torture porn' films, gross-out comedies are naturals for this category. Films that directly seem to contradict church teaching on matters such as euthanasia, suicide, vigilante killing and revenge also get O's no matter how lauded they are by the secular press." I also check the content advisory on Imdb, and such sites as DecentFilms or Common Sense Media before I watch anything. My big problem is that my list of all-time favorites already includes quite a few "O" movies. Several of those are films I used to love very much before my conversion but haven't seen recently and might not enjoy so much today (Body Double, Blue Velvet, Femme Fatale, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Altered States, Creepers, RoboCop) and others I either discovered after my conversion or have seen again since and can be positive I still love (Mulholland Drive, Phantasm, Birth, Prince of Darkness, Black Dahlia.) It is not as if I could just strike these titles off my list : I would be lying about myself. So either I have been permanently corrupted by all the bad influences I exposed myself to before my conversion (that all these films seem rather tame to me makes me fear I have), or I will outgrow these favorites some day, as the Christian influence makes me a better person. If you are a minor yourself, or an adult raised in a wholesome cultural environment, I suggest you simply ignore my ratings and avoid these titles. My favorite TV series are Battlestar Galactica, Seirei no Moribito (Guardian of the Spirit), 24, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Life on Mars, Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, La camťra explore le temps, Meerkat Manor, Freaks and Geeks and Star Trek, mostly because of the Vulcans, being half-Vulcan myself. I am also the author of three screenplays: a TMNT screenplay; an adaptation of A. A. Attanasio's novel "Silent", which is a retelling of the Trojan war among bikers and the mafia (see the official A. A. Attanasio website for a sample); and a classic Star Trek episode which I wrote for the "Star Trek New Adventures" guys, who never answered my mails. My other interests include theology, history, philosophy, manga, science/faith issues, animal rights and tai chi. I love my cats and the pigeons I feed, and my favorite books outside of the Bible include Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings", Gene Wolfe's "Shadow of the Torturer", and non-fiction works by Stanley L. Jaki, Stephen R. L. Clark and Warren H. Carroll.
