Rating History

Moana (2016)
5 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

Catchy music with fun side characters and a strong female lead who's a princess who doesn't need saving.

Doctor Strange

Trippy visuals and funny than I was expecting. I had a hard time identifying with Strange, though, so I wasn't as emotionally involved in this movie as other Marvel films.

The Red Turtle (La tortue rouge)
6 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

One of the hardest films I've ever had to rate.

It's beautiful. Visionary. Artistic. Sad. Happy. Funny. Bold. Surreal. NO DIALOGUE.

But the film never gives you a reason to care for the characters, other than the most base human need of survival. It's a strange film that captivated me but didn't emotionally engage me.

Godzilla Resurgence (Shin Godzilla)
6 years ago via Rotten Tomatoes

A lot funnier (and intentionally funny!) than I was expecting. Kaiju films almost always have tons of scenes with government officials, and it's completely boring. You're forced to watch countless characters with next-to-zero (at most) development so you can watch a little bit of giant monsters attacking. This film understands how ridiculous these meetings are and makes them funny. The city of Tokyo itself also feels like a character in the final Godzilla fight--something I haven't seen in a kaiju film before.

Like all Japanese kaiju films, the American actors are absolutely awful. And even though the film is funny, you still don't care that much for the characters.

Godzilla as a character is very different in this film, but not so different that he doesn't feel like Godzilla. The ending leaves it open for a sequel, and it's definitely a sequel I'll watch.

Pete's Dragon
Pete's Dragon (2016)

A simple yet effective story with a dragon-sized heart. This film literally made me cry. A criminally underseen gem of the summer.
