Pretty average movie, and a disappointing film from Frears. The acting and script are fairly cheesy. The later films from Frears show much more panache and sophistication.

It's Wes Anderson, so it's good. On the other hand, it seems a little bit directionless, especially in the middle section. It's also hard to come off the back of his terrific oeuvre, and the expectation it brings.

Ruby Sparks
Ruby Sparks (2012)

A horribly messy film, mostly let down by poor scriptwriting. The film seems unfocused and confused. Presumably, the art of writing is at it's core, but it doesn't have anything particularly revealing to say. Even worse, the audience is asked to sympathise with a major character whose existence is under question. Even even worse, almost all characters are wholly irritating, and the film is rife with over-acting.

Fascinating period of history. The documentary feels a little thin perhaps, and some of the editing is irritating, but terrific footage, which certainly captures the feel of the era.

The Ghost Writer

A surprisingly enjoyable film. Mostly a run-of-the-mill thriller, but the conspiracy elements make up for this with fascinating implications, especially with the obvious parallels to real-world characters.
