The Seventh Continent (Der Siebente Kontinent)

Usually I never read sypnosis before viewing the film as so in this one. The first two parts; I thought it was a sequel to to the Belgium film Jeanne Dielman, 23 rue du commerce...extremely boring realistic detailed life routine, then in part 3 suddenly the family went beserk for no apparent reasons; it was ridiculous, then the ending occured with an epilogue note and to my surprise and anger that the director actually took a real life event as an inspiration to make such a film. Why make such a film on real life horror stories? It was unnecessary and the film bores of pessimism.

A relaxing suspense film. It was interesting to see the planning of the assassination and the police investigation to find the assassin's identity up to a point which resulted a Deus Ex Machina : the scene at park how one investigator found the identity with the code name Jackal. At the end of the film, where the killer is in position for the assassination, it offered another Deus Ex Machina: the investigator meeting a policeman (of all policemen)the conversation was inaudible because of noise of crowd and fanfare. Not literally, just an expression meaning breaking my mother's heart. A high powered drama about a teenage boy who doesn't go along with mother and vice versa. The film is very interesting as it starts a mother and son fierce argument in the car and as you wonder why they act this way, especially the son. Further along the film you discover why they behave that way and hidden truths. It's not your typical teenage vs parent film, it surprised me. My favorite dramatic scene is when the mother tells the school director off over the phone, what a superb performance by Anne Dorval. Now that's drama!
